The Peer Mediation Organization is a group of students trained in mediation and conflict-resolution. Peer Mediation is an alternative way to settle conflicts in a confidential and relaxed environment. Each mediator took part in a two-day training process and has the necessary skills to aid in the resolution of peer conflicts. Each mediation is kept a common confidential under the contract that all mediators abide by. Peer Mediation is an alternative conflict-resolution medium for students of Assumption College to utilize. This is an alternative method without involving Residential Life, the Office of Student Affairs, or the Counseling Center. We believe that peer mediation creates a comfortable atmosphere where students are able to relate with and connect with other students. The job of the mediator is to mediate the session and not provide any specific solutions. Students who utilize mediation come up with their own solutions and terms to resolve the conflict. Therefore, the solutions are usually more long lasting and rewarding. The peer mediation organization goes beyond conflict resolution and has become involved in various campus wide activities.
For example, on Saturday, March 21, different members from several clubs at Assumption College joined together to participate in a campus-wide cleanup of the damages from the ice storm. Members of Allies, ALANA, Rowing, Women's Soccer, Women's Tennis, and Volleyball got down and dirty wearing their "Ice, Ice BABY" t-shirts. Peer mediators Lauren Johnson, Sandy McDaniel and Christina Rossi organized, while President Andy Rudzinski directed the event. As we all know, the ice storm left campus in ruins, and to get ready for spring some major cleaning up needed to be done. "The crew from Building Grounds was very impressed by how much was accomplished in a short time," says Dean of Studies, Robert Ravenelle. Participants cleaned behind Charlie's and areas around Emmanuel d'Alzon library and DiPasquale Media Center. Ravenelle brought his adorable dogs, which provided the entertainment and kept everyone amused. The students seemed very excited to participate and contribute anyway they could. There were various shifts that students could choose to work either from 12 p.m.-2 p.m. or 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Katherine Beltre, also a member of Peer Mediators, explained that, "It was fun and exciting to help out the building and grounds people. They seemed very excited to have us there and appreciated all the help they were getting." The campus clean up organized by peer mediation was able to allow students from various Assumption organizations to come together for a common cause. The peer mediation organization would like to extend a thank you to everyone who participated in the campus wide clean up and helped to revive Assumption.
